What This Does

Canva's Magic Write feature generates captions, patient education copy, and promotional text directly inside Canva's design tool — so you can write and design patient communications in the same place, without needing a separate AI tab.

Before You Start

  • Create a free Canva account at canva.com (if you don't have one)
  • Free accounts include limited Magic Write uses per month; Canva Pro includes more
  • Have the purpose of your design in mind (social post, flyer, recall card, etc.)

Steps

1. Start a design in Canva

  1. Go to canva.com and sign in
  2. Click Create a design and choose your format:
    • Instagram Post — for social media
    • A4 Document or US Letter — for printed patient flyers or handouts
    • Search "dental" in the search bar to find dental-specific templates
  3. Pick a template that fits your practice's look, or start with a blank canvas

2. Add a text element and open Magic Write

  1. Click on a text area in your design (or click + Add text to insert one)
  2. Double-click to enter edit mode — you'll see a text toolbar appear
  3. Look for the "AI" or "Magic Write" button in the toolbar above the text box (it may look like a sparkle icon ✨)
  4. Click it — a prompt box appears

What you should see: A small input field asking what you'd like to write.

3. Describe your content

  1. Type a clear description of what you need
  2. Click Generate — Canva writes the text and inserts it directly into your design

Example prompt: "Write a friendly Facebook post for a dental practice offering a spring teeth whitening special. Mention it's for existing patients. Include a call-to-action to call and book."

4. Edit and finalize

  1. Read the generated copy — edit for your practice name, pricing, and phone number
  2. Adjust fonts, colors, and layout as needed
  3. Click Download (top-right) to save as PNG or PDF, or Share to post directly to social media

Real Example

Scenario: You want to post about your practice's new patient offer on Facebook this week.

What you type in Magic Write: "Write a Facebook post announcing a new patient special at a family dental office. Include that it covers a cleaning, X-rays, and exam. Warm and welcoming tone. End with a call to book an appointment."

What you get: A 2–3 sentence social post ready to pair with a Canva dental template — total time: about 10 minutes from blank to posted.

Tips

  • Dental templates in Canva are pre-designed with placeholder images and colors — swap in your practice logo and colors for a branded look
  • After generating social copy in Magic Write, you can ask it to "make this shorter for Instagram" or "add a hashtag suggestion at the end"
  • For printed flyers (recall reminders, whitening promotions, new patient welcome cards), use Canva's Print option to order physical copies directly from Canva
