What you'll accomplish

By the end of this guide, you'll know how to use ChatGPT to decode confusing insurance denial language, understand what an EOB is really saying, identify patterns in claim denials, and generate scripts that explain complex insurance situations to patients in plain English — without needing a billing certification.

What you'll need

  • A ChatGPT account at {{tool:ChatGPT.url}} (free account works for most of this)
  • Access to your practice's recent EOBs and claim denials (paper or PDF — you'll type or paste non-PHI details)
  • Cost: Free — no subscription needed to get started

How-To Guide: Use ChatGPT to Decode Insurance EOBs and Denial Patterns

Step 1: Understand what you can and can't paste into ChatGPT

Before using AI for insurance work, it's important to know the HIPAA boundary:

You CAN paste:

  • Procedure codes (D2740, D4341, etc.)
  • Denial reason codes and descriptions
  • Insurance plan names and coverage percentages
  • General plan language from a Summary of Benefits

You CANNOT paste:

  • Patient names
  • Patient dates of birth or ID numbers
  • Any information that could identify a specific person

If you strip out the patient-specific details, you can use ChatGPT freely for insurance decoding.

What you should do: Before pasting any EOB content, replace the patient's name with "[Patient]" and remove their member ID number.
